God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply! Fill the earth and subdue it! Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that moves on the ground" (Genesis 1:27-28, NET).
Work, from God's original plan, was part of the creation process. In God's agenda, work was intended to be full of God's purpose, joy, and fulfillment, and would bring out his glory. Consider the sequence: 1) God created man and woman; 2) God blessed them; 3) God commanded them to bear fruit in abundance through whatever work they supervise; and 4) God gets the glory. God gets the glory. Man's work is really God's workmanship. Man's gifts, talents, training, creativity, imagination, authority, craftmanship, innovation, work attitude and habits, team leadership and team work, systems, relationships, etc. all are designed to give glory to God. Work is glorious.
But when sin marred God's beautiful plan, work became hard, painful, a struggle, unfulfilling, and even harmful. The worker must be rescued so that his work may become, once again, a way to honor and please God. To do good work today, God's servant must develop good attitudes, sharpen [even add] skills, and deepen his knowledge and wisdom.
